Empowering Learning with AI: My (so far, short) experience in the Classroom

As a teacher, I am always looking for ways to improve my students’ learning and make my daily work more efficient. In recent times, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a key tool that has allowed me to take a qualitative leap in my teaching practice. Today, I want to share how AI has become my ally in the classroom, from content development to personalized attention for each student.

1. Creating Innovative Projects

AI has allowed me to carry out innovative ideas quickly and efficiently. When I have a concept for a project, I use tools like ChatGPT to structure it, come up with an attractive name, and plan the necessary resources. Thanks to other platforms like MidJourney or DALL-E, I can generate images that make the project visually appealing. These tools also help me “sell” the idea, making it easier to explain and understand for students, colleagues, and school administrators.

An example of this is the “BookZone” project, a cozy relaxing reading space for the school, which I proposed for students from the woodworking, electronics, and computer science departments. AI helped me define the idea, create the logo, and plan the teamwork of the students, who are supposed to build the shelves and bean bags for the reading corners. Additionally, they also expected to collaboratively build arcade machines, involving students from woodworking, electricity, and computer science to work together on the design and assembly.

2. Automating Administrative Tasks

One of the great benefits of AI has been automating administrative tasks that, while necessary, tend to be repetitive and time-consuming. For example, in managing FCT (Work Based Learning), AI helps me draft follow-up forms and emails to engage partner companies. This has allowed me to focus more on what is essential: guiding students during their internships.

3. Generating Classroom Content

Content creation is one of the most time-consuming activities for teachers. Now, with AI, I can create materials tailored to students’ needs more quickly and personally. I use AI to generate examples, set up activities, and even design specific and detailed assignments. In this way, I can respond to students’ interests, making classes more dynamic and relevant for them.

4. Creating Rubrics and Personalized Evaluation

Assessment is a fundamental aspect of the teaching-learning process. I use AI to create detailed evaluation rubrics, which allows me to assess projects more efficiently and fairly. These rubrics also serve as a guide for students to know exactly what is expected of them at each stage of the project.

However, AI has limitations when it comes to evaluating student work. While it can generate rubrics and provide a structured approach to assessment, it lacks the ability to fully understand the nuances of each student’s work, such as creativity, effort, and the context behind their decisions. These elements require a human touch to be properly appreciated. As a teacher, my role is to bring empathy, insight, and a deep understanding of the student’s learning process—qualities that AI cannot replicate. The human element is essential to provide meaningful feedback, understand each student’s unique challenges, and support them in their growth journey.

In addition, AI has allowed me to give more personalized and detailed feedback to each student. By automating part of my work, I have more time to attend to their needs individually and provide face-to-face feedback tailored to their processes and learning pace.

5. Promoting Student Autonomy

Another great benefit of using AI in my teaching practice is promoting student autonomy. By generating personalized activities and providing specific resources through AI tools, I can empower students to take an active role in their learning. This has resulted in more engaged and motivated students, as they can explore and learn more independently.

In the Business Simulation course, my students also use AI tools to develop their projects. They create websites, draft professional emails, design social media posts, plan their business projects, generate ideas, and create logos using platforms like Wix, Canva, and ChatGPT. This hands-on experience with AI not only enhances their digital skills but also gives them a sense of ownership over their projects, further fostering independence and creativity.

To sum up, AI has become a valuable ally in my work as a teacher. It has allowed me to be more creative, productive, and efficient, and, above all, it has contributed to improving my students’ learning and educational experience. I am still in the process of exploring the full potential that AI can offer, but I am sure it is here to stay and to positively transform education.

And you, are your using AI in the classroom?
